Projects and Infrastructure

With over 25 years of experience, we specialize in large infrastructure projects in the mining, energy, and water sectors, ensuring they are “investor ready” and free from significant legal risks.

Mining

We provide legal advice to management on mine sites, drafting and vetting agreements, and conducting legal risk assessments. We’ve worked with clients in the mining industry, including those involved in coal, gold, and uranium mining.

Energy and Climate Change

We have extensive experience with the South African nuclear, renewable energy, and oil and gas energy regimes. We’ve advised clients on various energy projects, including solar PV facilities, wind energy facilities, and biomass plants.

Water

We provide extensive advice on the regulatory aspects of the National Water Act and water use entitlements. We’ve worked with clients on water-related projects, including acid mine drainage and water treatment solutions.

Game Farming and Protected Areas

We have vast experience in dealing with the South African biodiversity and permitting regime. We’ve advised clients on private nature reserves, rare species breeding programs, and disease-free buffalo breeding programs.

We advise clients on policy and legislation around the Just Transition, carbon offsetting, and net-zero journeys. We’ve worked with clients in various industries, including agriculture and mining, to develop sustainable and climate-resilient business plans.

Company Overview

Gunn Attorneys’ aim is simple. To be the best environmental, projects and infrastructure law firm in Africa. Gunn Attorney’s excellent project experience includes complex project advisory work in the environmental, energy, mining and climate law fields in South Africa and other Southern African jurisdictions.

With the experience that we have had in complex and high-profile projects, we know how to de-risk the legal elements of your projects and we partner with clients on the journey from conceptual or pre-feasibility stages to bankable financing stage.

This could take one of many forms depending on the structure of the project, but this would typically commence with a due diligence investigation that would enable client to determine whether to proceed with the project or not.  If the decision is taken to proceed based on the legal, technical and financial due diligence we would then assist client with the requisite commercial agreements that are required to consummate the transaction.  All sectors are overseen by critical regulators and we interact with the regulators to ensure that the necessary approvals are required.

Our mission is to think creatively within the framework of the law and in the project lifecycle, to turn legal challenges into solutions.
